『死』と三人兄弟
死として知られるこの存在は普遍的な現象でもある肉体の終わりの人格化であり、実際に存在するか否かは不明である。『死』については「三人兄弟の物語」の話が広く知られており、吟遊詩人ビードルにより有名になった。この物語によれば、ペベレル兄弟が激しく危険な川に魔法で橋をかけ難なく死をまぬかれる。『死』は三人を自分のものにできなかったことに憤ったが、一計を案じ、ひとりずつ褒美をさずけると申し出た。ペベレル兄弟はそれぞれニワトコの杖、蘇りの石、透明マントを手にしこの3つはのちに死の秘宝と呼ばれるようになる。

『死』とは吟遊詩人ビードルの物語の最後、「三人兄弟の物語」に登場する敵役[1]。物語の中で三人のペベレル兄弟（アンチオク、カドマス、イグノタス）はある日の夕暮れ時、危険な川に差し掛かった。これまで川を渡ろうとしてたくさんの人が命を落としている。三人は魔法を学んでいたので杖を一振りし橋をかけ渡り始めたが、途中でフードを被った何者かが行く手をふさいでいるのに気づいた[1]。
褒美を手にするペベレル兄弟
この人物こそ『死』であり、『死』は三人の獲物に出し抜かれ、その死を我が物にできなかったことに怒っていた[1]。しかし『死』は狡猾だった。三人の兄弟が魔法を使ったことをほめるふりをし、『死』を出し抜いた三人に、それぞれ褒美をさずけると申し出た。三人の兄弟は性格も考え方もまったく異なっていたので、違うものを『死』に要求した。『死』はペベレル兄弟にそれぞれニワトコの杖、蘇りの石、透明マントを与え[1]、この3つはのちに死の秘宝と呼ばれるようになる。

Death is a minor antagonist featured in the last of 吟遊詩人ビードルの物語, The Tale of the Three Brothers.[1] In the story, the three Peverell brothers (Antioch, Cadmus, and Ignotus) are featured out travelling the world, when at twilight they came to a treacherous river, one that had been known to claim many lives when attempting to cross it.[1] The Peverells, who were powerful wizards, merely whipped out their wands and created a bridge out of thin air, and casually began to cross the river, when they were met by a black hooded figure midway across, blocking their path.[1]

This figure was none other than Death himself, who is outraged that he has been cheated out of new victims, due to their magical abilities, and equally enraged that he cannot take them as his own.[1] But Death was cunning and pretended to congratulate the brothers on being powerful enough to elude him, before offering each of them a prize for their skill. When Death made it clear that he would not let the brothers pass across the bridge without him fulfilling each of their personal desires, the wizarding siblings decided to go along with Death's offer, but each for different motives and reasons.[1] Death proceeded to give the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility to each of the brothers, a collection of items that would come to be known in time as the Deathly Hallows.[1]
